On 26th February, 1917, 12th King’s Royal Rifle Corps of 60 Brigade, 20th Division, moved into the front line trenches in the Lesboeufs sector of the Somme. The following afternoon, 27th February, there was a one hour bombardment of the enemy line opposite by the heavy artillery. Unfortunately much of this fell short and did a lot of damage to Mercier and Dolly trenches and also killed seven of the battalion and wounded six more. On 28th February a minor operation was carried out in the early morning by 10th King’s Royal Rifle Corps, on their left, against an enemy barricade in a sunken road. It was preceded by an intense bombardment of the position and in the ensuing retaliatory bombardment by the German guns a number of casualties were sustained by 12th King’s Royal Rifle Corps, including Harry Tyrrell. |
